In Luke 4:18 Jesus says,

“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because HE has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed.”

Jesus came to set the captives FREE. He came to bring freedom to the oppressed! Pastor Bill reminded us Sunday that we all have a Humpty Dumpty complex. Because of sin, we’ve had a “great fall”. Nothing and no one, not “all the kings horses” or even “all the king’s men” can put us back together again. Only the King can do that! Only Jesus can put us back together, redeem our brokenness, and free us forever.

In Romans 6, Paul reminds us of what God does when we experience a new day through God’s grace.. “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!” So Paul poses the question, does our freedom give us license to sin? Is God’s grace a cheap grace? A common grace? Is it okay to sin because He loves us unconditionally? Paul answers these questions in the verse following. Verse 16 says, “Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?” Salvation is a surrendered life! Grace isn’t permission to sin, but freedom from it. In the end, grace when experienced and realized isn’t going to lead to a flippant life of reckless sin. It will lead to freedom and a desire for obedience to the One we love!

POINTS TO PONDER:

1. Have you tried or are you trying to seek freedom from something other than Jesus?

2. Do you feel like you have a good understanding of God’s grace?

3. How has the freedom Jesus offers changed your life?
