Sunday we began a brand new series called “Stories of the Bible”. Pastor Bill kicked it off with the story of Jonah. He reminded us that even though Jonah is a familiar story, most of what people know about Jonah is found in the first three verses, however there is so much more to the story. Most think of His failure and disobedience and for that its how you finish that counts! There are a number of things that lead to failure and disobedience and there are a number of things that lead to finishing well. We are going to learn both lessons through this series as we study the life of Jonah.

“The word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying, ‘Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me.’ But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.” (Jonah 1:1-3)

The first thing we see from these verses is that the “word of the Lord came to Jonah”. It was personal… it was from God to Jonah for a specific purpose. Just like we see in Jonah’s story, God wants to be actively involved in ours lives as well. As we walk with God, He will call us into His Kingdom service! May we be people who respond like the Prophet Isaiah who said, “Here am I, Lord, send me!” Rather than like Jonah who tried to run from God’s call.

Even though Jonah tried to run, God still had a plan. Philippians 1:6 says, “For I am confident this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” God has a plan for your life and He will see it through… all of it!

POINTS TO PONDER:

1. In what area of your life is God telling you to “arise and go”?

2. Define your Ninevah. How can you minister there this week?

3. Take some time to ask God how you can be on mission this week!
