Sunday was week 2 of our brand new series “Stories of the Bible”. Last week we left off talking about how Jonah operated with partial obedience to God. He “arose and went” as God called, but he went in the opposite direction. Pastor Bill shared how partial obedience is still disobedience! Jonah made the decision to go to Tarshish instead of Nineveh, and there at Joppa he found a boat waiting for him. Pastor Bill posed the question, “What does Satan have waiting for you right now to distract you from obedience to God and take you in the wrong direction?” There are always things trying to pull us away from obedience. The question is, will we fall for the devil’s schemes?

How does God get our attention when we head in the wrong direction?

  1. By His Word. Isaiah 30:21 says, “Your ears will hear a word behind you, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right or to the left.” The Bible talks about the Word of God being alive and active… it still has the power to speak to us today!
  2. By His Holy Spirit. John 16:13 says, “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.” The Holy Spirit lives inside of Believers to guide, convict and direct!

Jonah 1:4 says, “Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.” Bottom line, God will get our attention when we quit paying attention. Just like He sent the storm to wake Jonah up, so He will use things in our lives to wake us up.

POINTS TO PONDER:

1. Are there things in your life that are pulling you away from obedience to God?

2. God can’t get our attention through His Word if we’re not actively in it. How much time do you spend each week in the Word of God?

3. Is God trying to get your attention right now? Take a moment to pause, pray, and seek Him for direction.
